Deploying Web Password Filler in Air-Gapped Environments

In air-gapped environments, administrators can deploy the Web Password Filler (WPF) browser extension by downloading the extension package and distributing it through internal infrastructure. This topic covers how to download, deploy, and configure WPF using Group Policy.

Download the Extension

Download the latest version of WPF for Chrome and Edge: WebPasswordFiller_current.zip

Prepare for Deployment

To prepare for deployment:

1. Extract the zip file.

2. Copy the extracted folder to a network location accessible to all target computers.

3. Ensure that share permissions grant 'read access' to all accounts or users that will receive the extension

Deploying Extensions with Group Policy

  1. Follow Google's guide, Force-install apps and extensions, to deploy a Chrome extension using Group Policy.

The same process applies to Microsoft Edge, which is Chromium-based and supports Chrome extensions.

  2. In the Define the extension download location section of the Google article, set the path to your internal network location where the extension files are stored.

  3. Use the following extension ID when configuring Group Policy:

Configure Permissions and Restrictions (Optional)

The Google Support article describes additional permissions administrators can enforce. For example:

  • Prevent WPF from autofilling or prompting to save credentials for specific sites.

  • Restrict WPF to run only on specific sites.

For instructions, see the Prevent apps and extensions from altering webpages section of the Google article.
