Creating Secrets

Creating secrets with Delinea Credential Manager enhances security and reduces risks by providing safe access to sensitive credentials across web and mobile platforms, ensuring all credentials are securely vaulted and abide by your company's security standards.

You can create secrets two ways:

  • Credential Manager extension

  • Prompt to save dialog

Creating a Secret with the Credential Manager Extension

To create a secret with the Credential Manager extension:

  1. Open the Credential Manager extension.

  2. Click the + icon.

  3. Select the folder where you want to store the secret, either a personal folder or a shared folder.

If you select a shared folder, the secret can be seen by those who have access to the folder. If you select a personal folder, it is only visible to you.

  4. In Template, choose the type of secret.

The Default set includes Web Password and Credit Card templates.

An admin can grant access to additional templates.

  5. Fill in the required fields (depending on the configuration of the secret's template), such as, Name, URL, Username and Password.

  6. If you already have credentials, enter your current password. If you are creating a new set of credentials, click Generate.

We recommend using Generate to create a strong password for your secret and updating the corresponding site's password to match.

  7. Click Save to vault the secret.

The data for each secret is secure in transit, whether it's being fetched from or pushed to the Delinea Platform or Secret Server. When the extension displays data retrieved from these sources, it does not cache the information.

Creating a Secret Using the Prompt to Save Dialog

To create a secret using the Prompt to save dialog:

Be sure that Prompt to save credentials is enabled in Secret Server.

  1. Open the login page of the website where you want to create a secret.

  2. Enter credentials that haven't been vaulted already.

  3. Complete your login on the website.

The Delinea Credential Manager extension prompts you to save your login details.

If the default secret requires fields beyond username and password, the save dialog will prompt you to create the secret, as it cannot be completed directly from the dialog.

  4. Click one of the three options:

    • Never for this site

    • Not Now

    • Save

  5. If you clicked Save, the credentials and website details are vaulted. Click Done.

Depending on your settings, Delinea Credential Manager automatically fills your credentials each time you visit the site. If you enable Auto Submit in Autofill Settings, the system also logs you in after autofilling your credentials. For more information, see Configuring User Extensions as an Administrator.
